Assists the County Attorney by performing a wide and complex variety of administrative activities and services which often require the interpretation and application of established policies, rules, and regulations.
The incumbent must possess the ability to perform overall County functions and activities related to legal actions, court functions, contracts, and deeds.
The incumbent may be required to make commitments and decisions which have significant consequences of error.
This position requires a great deal of coordination with the public, federal, state, local government and courts.
The position requires the incumbent to become the Virginia Freedom of Information Act Officer (FOIA) for Pittsylvania County.

Takes and transcribes difficult and confidential memoranda and other correspondence; Maintains and stays informed of the schedule of the County Attorney and various court dockets; Conducts research as directed by County Attorney into legal matters of the County; Compiles data and prepares legal documents and correspondence as assigned; Coordinates correspondence and reports implemented by the Circuit Court, General District Court, and any state or federal court for the county attorney; Types a variety of legal, technical, and statistical reports, special studies, documents and correspondence; Assists and directs citizens with information requests either in person or via telephone; Sets up and maintains filing systems; May process payments for departmental expenditures; Maintains confidential, legal, and departmental records and files; Performs routine office duties including typing, transcribing, receiving and making phone calls, routing mail, duplicating, filing, faxing and Laserfiche scanning; Performs all duties as required by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA); Performs related tasks as directed by the County Attorney.

Must possess a thorough knowledge of court and office methods and practices; A comprehensive knowledge of filing systems, including Clerk of Court files; Experience developing business forms, letters, agendas, transcriptions, codes and contracts as well as other necessary documents; Must be skilled in report writing, including business English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and office terminology; Ability to multi-task and prioritize work, and meet deadlines; Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and a form of Desktop Publishing, as well as the Virginia Supreme Court system; Must have the ability to deal courteously, effectively, and cooperatively with the public and other employees, especially in situations that require tact and discretion, and when answering questions in person and over the telephone; Ability to exercise good judgment in identifying and handling confidential and legal information and the importance of maintaining confidentiality; Virginia Notary or the ability to become a Virginia Notary.
Education and
Experience:
Four (4) years of administrative experience preferred with knowledge of legal procedures and terminology.
Certified paralegal preferred.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.
g.
business office, light traffic).
